*** S.D.L.S. Pick Vs. Drill Guarantee ***
Very, VERY rarely does a lock need to be drilled to get it unlocked.
In fact, we have had this claim, and this guarantee, since 1988, and in all those years we have NEVER yet had to drill any of the thousands of "normal" (non-broken, non-high security, normally functioning locks) lockouts we have completed. Because we pride ourselves on our ability to pick nearly any non-malfunctioning / non-broken lock* without drilling, our guarantee to you is:
With S.D.L.S. you will always have the choice of allowing a drill out in extraordinary circumstances where picking is not accomplishing an opening, or of calling another locksmith. If we cannot open the lock by normal means, and you do not choose to have the lock drilled, we do not charge for our time or services.
If drilling is ever required in extraordinary circumstances, and agreed to by the customer, S.D.L.S. will provide a standard, residential or commercial quality replacement knob to secure you at no charge, and key it to match your existing lock**.
*Guaranty applies only to normal, functioning, working locks in "reasonable" condition - Technician will be the sole determining factor as to condition or functionality of lock to be picked. Guaranty specifically excludes already broken locks, improperly installed locks, "frozen" locks, etc.
Guaranty specifically Excludes all high security, sidebar, or proprietary keyway locks, including but not limited to: Schlage Primus or Everest, Medeco, Kwikset "Smart Key", dimple keys, etc.
**Free replacement knobs are provided from technicians existing stock, and may or may not match existing hardware type or style (i.e. Lever, Handleset, etc.) - A replacement knob from existing stock at N/C, in order to secure the premises, and ONLY in the event of a drill out being absolutely necessary, and ONLY if agreed to in writing by the customer, is the entire extent of our guarantee. S.D.L.S. is not liable for damage to any lock in a drill situation, nor for free replacement of "matching" hardware in an unlock situation. By agreeing to an unlock, you are agreeing to the opening of the door by any means necessary unless otherwise explicitly stated and signed for.
S.D.L.S. offers this guarantee as a courtesy, and reserves the right to withdraw it at any time by notice in this space.

*We will happily meet with you the landlord, or your representative, as well as the Sheriff at a specific time on request, based on technician availability. We will NOT be late, and we are experts at being circumspect. Even if early, the tenant(s) will not be aware, and we use only unmarked vans for this service. However... Because we time these particular calls very precisely to meet your needs, and because we do not charge additional fees beyond our normal rekeying charge for this service, please be aware that in instances where the Sheriff is 20 minutes or more late, we do charge for wait time, in addition to our normal rekeying prices. Our hourly rate is $85, and wait time is charged in half hour increments, from the time of the original agreed appointment, until the arrival of the Sheriff. Please make your arrangements precisely.

*** We always provide at minimum, TWO new keys. ***
Standard Automobile Keys are what's known in the trade as "mechanical" keys. Mechanical keys are, by default, those without "chips," or "transponders." They require labor to fabricate, but no computer programming to match to the car.
"Rekeying" an automobile is NOT the same thing as making keys to it when the existing keys are missing. To "Rekey" an automobile is to remove every lock cylinder; ignition, doors, trunk, glove box, hatch, etc., and throw away ALL the tumblers or wafers in each one. The cylinders are then reconfigured with different, new tumblers or wafers, requiring a new key, and rendering the old keys useless. "Rekeying" is labor intensive, and very, VERY expensive. Please be aware of which service you are requesting.
Automotive "rekeying" is often suggested by law enforcement agencies as a matter of course if keys have been lost or stolen, etc. This suggestion is made by rote, and often without consideration for the costs involved.
The ONLY time rekeying for automobiles is a good idea, is if your car keys have been stolen, or are missing, and you can say with near certainty that there IS "personally identifying information," including the address where the car is parked normally, attached to, or would be found with, those keys. In THAT specific circumstance, we too, would suggest rekeying.
If you've lost your key ring at the beach (or elsewhere), and there is no name/address tag attached, and you live elsewhere, rekeying is NOT a necessity. The chances of someone finding your keys, while also deciphering where you live, and successfully matching those keys to the right car are astronomical, and does not justify the cost.
If you have questions, or want more clarification, please feel free to ask.

"Transponder" or "chip" Keys are in the simplest terms, keys that have a brian in them - The keys themselves require labor for fabrication from scratch, in addition to specialized computer programming to allow it to start the car.
Transponder programming available for the following cars: Most Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Mazda P/U's, GM vehicles (OnBoard or equipped with VATS) - Call for details.
The vast majority of Transponder keys are priced at the low end of the scale, for instance, all Fords, Mercury's, etc. The high end of the pricing range is for vehicles that require additional equipment and programming. Call for quote or information.

$98.00 + S&H $7.00 (Priority Mail) Includes Hardware (ignition), keyed to your existing key when possible. (Please read instructions below thoroughly!) |
| ***Do you need Duplicate/Additional Factory Code Cut Transponder Keys?*** |
$25.00 each with ignition purchase, S&H already included. -OR- $35.00 each + $7.00 S & H (Priority Mail) without ignition.
Ford Focus is one of the many Ford vehicles that allow for self-programming of additional duplicate Transponder keys, so long as you have TWO (2) working Transponder keys.
The same process is used to create duplicate Transponder keys as is used for ignitions. We will require a good quality, high resolution digital photo of your existing key to create a duplicate transponder. Please see the instructions above for details.
Self-Programming instructions will be included with your cut keys. |
*** Be Proactive & Save $$$ - Call us when it starts to stick, BEFORE it has to be drilled out! ***
Ford Focus, model year 1999 through 2007 (thus far) have a factory installed ignition issue. Thousands of owners have been affected, however Ford does not consider it a "safety issue" and have thus far refused to issue a recall.
The problem with the factory installed ignitions, in a nutshell, is that the tumblers (actually "wafers" in a Focus), and the poor quality pot metal used within the Factory Installed ignitions itself, both interact to begin to shed metal shavings (burrs) over time. This is caused by the simple in and out of the key, the poor design, the cheap metal, and scraping against each other, over and over again. This clogs the ignition with tons of tiny metal shavings, which then wedge themselves into all the moving parts.
Some symptoms to watch for include:
¤ Increasing difficulty in turning the ignition key.
¤ Key feeling "dirty" or "gooey" when inserting or removing.
¤ Ignition "Sticking."
¤ Key getting "locked" into the "On" or "Accessory" position.
¤ Unable to remove key at all.
¤ End result (way too late for warning signs): Unable to start the car at all due to the key being "frozen" solid.
Once stuck, some online sources suggest hitting the key with a mallet or something else hard until the key can be turned again. We do NOT suggest this. Doing so shakes loose even MORE burrs, and makes each successive thump one step closer to a full drill out vs. a simple replacement. There are also MANY suggestions to put WD40 into the ignition to try to free the key. We do NOT suggest this for ANY lock, ever, but particularly in this situation. If you have read the description of the issue above, you'll see that adding WD40 into the mix will only gum up the works worse, forcing the burrs to stack / clump up and clog even more than they already are. :) You can add to the damage already done by following any of these "fixes," as well as some of the even more suspect "fixes" out there, potentially adding to the cost of the repair.
Options, based on various symptoms:
*Drill & Replace: (OEM Ignition Failure - When your Focus ignition key fails to turn at all in year models 2000 through 2004)
Once your Focus ignition has completely locked up (usually with your key in it!), the only way to get a working ignition again is to physically & specially drill out the now irreparable, cheap quality, factory installed ignition, and replace it with the ignition that Ford SHOULD have installed in the first place, and which, interestingly, they ARE using now in some cases - The correct ignition is NOT a Ford OEM product. It is a Strattec.
**Remove, Rekey, & Replace: (When your OEM Ignition begins to be difficult to turn, but PRIOR to actual ignition lock-up)
If your key still turns, even if with difficulty, and can still start your car, you can save a significant amount by being proactive and having the factory installed but rapidly breaking down ignition replaced in advance of its final failure (unable to turn or remove the key at all). In this case, if the key can still be turned, we do not need to drill the ignition in order to remove it.
***Mail Order Replacement (For local or out-of-area "DIY" customers - Generally applies to the same "hard to turn but not yet locked up" situation directly above, although many of our customers are handy and also do the drill & replace themselves using one of our replacement ignitions - Instructions can be sent for a full drill out):
If your key still turns, and you are reasonably handy, and you are able to take a CLEAR digital picture (See an example of "clear / readable" digital photos here) of your key and e-mail it to us; we will key up a new ignition to your existing key (This technique, and the techniques above do NOT require the keys to be programmed or reprogrammed - You will be able to install and go), and mail it to you via Priority Mail.
Once we determine that the digital photo is clear and readable (See an example of "clear / readable" digital photos here), we will invoice you via PayPal for credit/debit card payment (no PayPal account is required for this).
This method of payment is the fastest possible turn-around (next business/mailing day). Alternately, you may pay at PayPal via eCheck*. Please be aware that eChecks take an average of 3 to 5 business days to clear your bank and to show as paid.
*If you choose to pay via eCheck, your ignition will ship the day the funds clear.
Once cleared payment is received, we will mail your ignition, and simple replacement instructions via two day USPS Priority Mail.
This offer applies ONLY within the Continental United States.
When e-mailing, please note prominently if you have TWO or more different keys to your vehicle, or a different key for your door than your ignition. This is an indication that your ignition or your doors have been changed to a DIFFERENT keyway than factory, and we need to direct you on what key picture we require.
We can NOT guarantee a working ignition, or free rekeys if the photo you send us is to a door key that does not work the ignition, for the obvious reasons.
***If you have no way of taking a digital photo of your key, please e-mail us at focus@sandiegolockandsafe.com for an alternate solution.
To send a digital picture or to inquire specifically about mail order replacement, please e-mail directly to focus @ sandiegolockandsafe.com
***Yahoo E-Mail Users!*** Please ADD "quotes@sandiegolockandsafe.com" to your addressbook BEFORE sending your request or Yahoo will categorize it as Spam. Thanks!
No matter what method you choose, INSIST on a Strattec replacement ignition. It is the ONLY appropriate replacement ignition for your vehicle, and the only one that does not have the same problem reoccur over time. :)
(!) New Keys or Reprogramming Existing Keys (!) When having your failed Factory Installed Ford Focus ignition replaced, whether by drilling out, or simple remove & replace, don't let any locksmith or dealer mechanic tell you that:
a) New keys, necessitating new programming, are required...
b) Reprogramming of your existing keys is required...
c) Even if they offer them to you at a "discounted" rate..!
New keys, necessitating new programming, or reprogramming your existing keys are both completely unnecessary!
There are NO circumstances where either would be "required." Any competent locksmith should, as a matter of course, and as a matter of courtesy(!), key your replacement Ford Focus ignition TO your existing keys prior to installing it. Keying your replacement Ford Focus ignition to your existing keys is a VERY simple matter, and takes very little time. If the Ford Focus replacement ignition being installed is keyed to your existing keys, your existing keys will work immediately. No programming or reprogramming needed, period.
Any locksmith who insists that new keys are required, or that your existing keys require reprogramming, is padding his or her bill. Period.
As an aside, if you allow the locksmith to make you "new" keys, you'll also end up with a two key system (one for the doors - the "old" key, and another for the ignition - the "new" key). Of course, they'll probably offer to rekey your doors to the new key as well, "at a discount"...lol!
DON'T fall for it!

*For missing cabinet keys: If the face of the lock on the cabinet/drawer has tiny letters/numbers stamped on it, in most cases, this is a key code. Key codes for drawers/cabinets, etc., are usually still valid, however, if the lock was rekeyed at any point, or if the lock face was mis-stamped by the manufacturer, the key code, even if present, will not be valid. In these cases, we charge the higher of the two rates to remove, pick to open, and fabricate a key for the drawer/cabinet.
**If rekeying/changing the lock on a Mailbox at the same time as other services (rekeying, etc.), the charge is a flat rate of $40 rather than $89. |

Layman's Guide to some common Locksmithing & Security Terms: (Including Tips to increase your Security & save you money.) |
|
|
 |
Blade of Key - The blade of a key is that portion of the key that inserts into the keyhole, the part that sometimes breaks off inside the lock. Locksmiths can usually remove the broken part and reconstruct the key. |
| Back to the List of Terms |
 |
Bow of Key - The bow of a key is that portion of the key that does not insert into the keyhole, the part that is held onto and which often has identifying information on it. Sometimes a code number is stamped on the bow of a key. A Security Professional can make a key from the code number. Therefore, it's a good practice to keep a written record of the information on the bows of your keys, especially car keys. If you lost your car keys you could present the code number to a Locksmith. Upon properly verifying your ownership of the car (usually requiring registration papers and drivers license), the Locksmith could make you a key from the code number. |

 |
Codes, Keys by - Often times keys can be made by a Locksmith from the code number of a lock. This is common with vehicles, padlocks, filing cabinets, etc. Requiring proof of ownership before cutting a key by code is a standard procedure used by Security Professionals to safeguard security. Additional requirements for car ignition keys may be mandated by State law (registration, driver's license, etc.). |

 |
Combination - A sequence of numbers, along with corresponding directions of rotation (clockwise, counter-clockwise) and iterations (frequency with which each number of the sequence is dialed). If you have the sequence of numbers for a combination but have forgotten the pattern of rotations and iterations, you can contact your local Security Professional for directions. Requiring proof of ownership before dispensing these directions is a standard procedure used to safeguard security. |
| Back to the List of Terms |
 |
Combination Lock - A lock which is operated by dialing (rotating a numbered dial) the correct combination. Digital locks, where a sequence of numbers on a keypad are pressed are also considered combination locks. |

 |
Garage Door Remote Control Units - Never leave garage door remotes in auto!!!! Thieves love to break into cars, particularly at movie theater lots, steal the remote and vehicle registration, go to the home, back a van up to the garage, then spend the next two hours emptying the valuables from the house. Additionally, a quality deadlock and deadbolt are strongly recommended for the door leading from the garage into the house. |

 |
Key Lock - A lock which requires a key to operate, as contrasted to a combination lock. |
| Back to the List of Terms |
 |
Keyed Alike - Locks are said to be keyed-alike (KA) when one and only one key operates all of them. This is in contrast to locks that are keyed-different (KD) and not the same as locks that are Master-Keyed. |
| Back to the List of Terms |
 |
Keyed Different - Locks in a group of locks that are "keyed-different" each require their own individual keys to operate. No individual key will operate more than one lock in the group. |
| Back to the List of Terms |
 |
Keyway - The configuration of grooves, millings, along the blade of a key. Just as you "can't put a square peg in a round hole", neither can you put any old key into any lock. The keyway of the key must coincide with the keyway of the lock. Since a Master-key must enter all the locks of a Master-keyed group of locks, all the locks in the group must have keyways compatible with the Master-key. Examples of different keyways include, Schlage, Kwikset, Baldwin, Weslock, etc. |

 |
Locksmith / Security Associations - are organizations committed to safeguarding the trust society has placed in Security Professionals, and the Security Industry. This is pursued in a number of ways, varying from Association to Association and from State to State. |
Some principle ways are:
- Accountability - through security checks, background investigations, fingerprinting, licensing, etc.
- Training - through ongoing hands-on classes at the local, state and national levels, including Manufacturer and Supplier sponsored classes and seminars.
- Education - through Association bulletins and top-notch National-level Journals, Books and Manuals.

Lost Keys - Lost keys are one of those facts of life that make things, well - interesting. If the keys were lost near your residence or automobile, or if there was identifying information on your key-ring, then you should definitely have your locks ReKeyed by a Security Professional. If those were the last existing copies of your keys, then, after properly pounding your head against the wall and asking yourself, why you put off getting duplicates of those keys made, relax. Your local Security Professional can generate new keys for you out of thin air, and Re-key your locks at the same time if necessary. It is not necessary to buy new locks. |

 |
Master Key - A Master Key is a key that is designed to operate all the locks in a specific group of locks. It is a myth that there exists a particular Master Key that will open all locks. In order to Master-key a group of locks the locks must all be made by the same manufacturer or at least have interchangeable Keyways. |
| Back to the List of Terms |
 |
Master - Keyed - In a group of locks that are Master-keyed (MK) each lock is operable by both its own individual key and the Master-Key. Each individual key operates its own lock only. The Master-Key operates all the locks in the group. This is the simplest type of Master-Keyed set-up. Other intricate systems are also possible using sub-Masters, Grand-Masters, etc. |

 |
Padlock - Combinations - If you've forgotten the combination of a combination-type padlock you can contact your local Locksmith. Most Locksmiths have code books and for a nominal charge will provide you with the combination. Requiring proof of ownership before providing the combination is a standard procedure used by Locksmiths to safeguard security. If your padlock has the code number on it, make a written record of it and then obliterate the code markings. This prevents someone else from obtaining the combination to your lock or from making a key, if your padlock is of the type that uses a key. |

 |
Rekeying a lock - Rekeying (changing) a lock is the process of replacing the tumblers (pins, pin tumblers) of a lock cylinder with other tumblers of different sizes. The lock will then require a different key to operate. The new key will coincide with the new tumblers and the old key will no longer work. In other words, it is not necessary to buy new locks. Re-keying locks is something that should be done if you have moved into a new residence or lost a set of keys. It is a good practice NOT to have any identifying information on your key ring, especially your address or phone number.
Automobile locks can be Re-keyed as well as regular door locks. Re-keying locks is usually significantly less expensive than replacing locks. |

 |
Skeleton Key - An old-fashioned key used in warded locks. While it is true that 3 or 4 basic configurations will operate a large number of warded type locks, there is none the less a great variety of this type of key. Some warded locks are very intricate and are used in institutional facilities. It is a myth that there exists a particular skeleton key that will open all locks. |
| Back to the List of Terms |
 |
Tumblers - are those parts inside a lock (key lock or safe lock) that have to be aligned to precise positions in order for the lock to operate. With a key lock, the tumblers are aligned by using the correct key. In a safe lock the tumblers are aligned by dialing the correct combination. |
